About Atlanta
Throughout its history, Atlanta has always been an important city in the southeast, connecting one network to another. In its early history, the railways of Atlanta have served as a gateway for trade to the Midwest, and played an integral role in supplying the Confederacy during the Civil War. In 1851 Atlanta was the only city in North America to be set afire for war strategy. Since then, the city has risen from the ashes of its torched past to be a bustling metropolis of beautiful landscaping and architecture, a haven for fine art and entertainment, a melting pot of varying cultural influences, and a massive transportation hub for not only the United States, but also the world. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport bears the proud distinction of being "the world’s busiest passenger airport," with a passenger terminal complex equivalent in size to more than 45 football fields.
Since its settlement in 1822, it has undergone some major transformations commercially, politically, and socially. From the Reconstruction Period, to the Civil Rights Movement, to the 1996 Olympic Games, Atlanta has seen growth from every angle becoming the 9th largest metropolitan city (33rd largest city) in the US. In serving the leisure interests of over 5 million people, Atlanta has 130 retail centers and 54 public parks, and is home to the fourteenth largest mall in the nation – The Mall of Georgia.
Atlanta is the Mecca in the southeast in entertainment and commerce. Some of the world’s top corporations and Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in Atlanta, including Coca-Cola, CNN, UPS, Georgia Pacific, and Delta Airlines to name a few. In entertainment, Atlanta continues to be a major force in the music industry, and is extending its reach to film and television. Atlanta is the location where a number of award winning films (The Blind Side) and popular television shows (Vampire Diaries, One Tree Hill) have been shot with productions to come. Also, Atlanta has even been attracting the eyes of major motion picture production studios to set up shop in Atlanta (Screen Gems, Tyler Perry Studios).
Throughout its extensive history Atlanta has proven to be a city of strength, resilience, and growth and will continue to shine in the eyes of Atlantans and visitors alike as a thriving city, rich in southern tradition and accented with a modernized flair.
